The AI certification market has exploded in 2026. Every platform, every cloud provider, every third-party training company wants to put letters after your name. Most of them aren't worth much. A few of them represent genuine, verifiable knowledge that clients and employers are starting to look for.
Here's my clear-eyed take on the three major vendor certification programs - what they actually test, who they're for, and what they're worth in the real world.
"A certification tells clients you understand the platform. Your philosophy tells them whether to trust your judgment. Both matter - but not equally."
Anthropic - The Most Interesting Newcomer
A proctored, architecture-level exam testing whether you can design and deploy production-grade Claude AI systems. Five domains: API architecture, prompt engineering, agentic systems, Claude Code, and responsible deployment. Available through the Claude Partner Network - free to join.
This is the most exciting certification in the space right now - not because Anthropic is necessarily the best platform, but because of timing. It launched in March 2026. Very few people outside major consulting firms have it. The first-mover window is genuinely real.
What makes it distinctive is scope. Unlike cloud provider certs that test whether you can configure their services, the CCA-F tests whether you understand production architecture decisions - context management tradeoffs, agentic failure modes, responsible deployment patterns. That's a different category of knowledge entirely.
The 13 free preparation courses on Anthropic Academy are genuinely good. They're structured, practical, and created by Anthropic's own team. Work through them before attempting the exam.
Google - Broadest Range, Most Immediately Useful
Practical, hands-on training using Gemini across Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet), NotebookLM, and AI Studio. Includes three months of Google AI Pro access. Designed for professionals, not engineers. Available globally.
Technical certification for building production GenAI applications with Vertex AI and the Gemini API. Covers RAG, model tuning, and deployment. Comparable in depth to Azure AI-102. Around $200 AUD for the exam.
Google has the most mature and immediately monetizable certification path. The reason is simple: Google Workspace is already embedded in most Australian small businesses. They're paying for Gemini features they've never touched. The AI Professional Certificate gives you the practical knowledge to help them actually use what they're already paying for.
The GEAR program (Gemini Enterprise Agent Ready) is worth watching - a free 9-week cohort with instructor-led training and exam vouchers. Keep an eye on when the next Australian cohort opens.
OpenAI - Watch This Space
Scenario-based certification delivered through ChatGPT. Launched in late 2025 through employer pilots (Walmart, Accenture, BCG). Broader public access rolling out through 2026. Credentials via Credly. Full public access not yet available.
OpenAI's certification program is the least mature of the three. It's real, it's coming, and when it's fully public it'll be valuable - but right now access is largely limited to employer pilot programs. The free OpenAI Academy content is worth engaging with now to build familiarity. The formal certification is one to add once public access stabilises.
The Honest Take
Certifications from the major AI vendors have a specific value: they verify that you've engaged with the platform's own documentation and thinking in a structured way. That's worth something - particularly to clients who want to know you're not just winging it.
What they don't tell you is whether someone has good judgment, whether they understand when not to use AI, or whether their recommendations are genuinely client-aligned rather than vendor-aligned. Those qualities come from experience and values, not from passing an exam.
- Start with Anthropic Academy's free courses - 13 courses, all free, all certificated
- Join the Claude Partner Network now while first-mover advantage exists
- Pursue the Google AI Professional Certificate for immediate SMB applicability
- Sit the CCA-F exam within six months of starting preparation
- Add OpenAI when broader public access opens
The certification path is a foundation, not a destination. What you build on top of it - real client outcomes, honest case studies, a clear philosophy - is what actually differentiates you in this market.
